Alicia Keys BUY LIFE
If you’ve followed this blog, you know I am a huge Alicia Keys fan…her music is fantastic, and her charity work with Keep a Child Alive rocks your/my/our world. It’s also going to rock the Twitasphere and facebook universe on December 1, World AIDS Day.
On that day, an international day of remembrance, Alicia has persuaded several of her famous pals to forego any Twitter feed updates or facebook postings–to go digitally dark–until the charity has raised one million dollars. It may be hard for those addicted to telling their fans each time they eat a sandwich, but Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Ryan Seacrest, Willow and Jaden Smith, Kim and Khloe Kardashian, Jennifer Hudson, Katie Holmes, Usher, and Serena Williams have all signed on. It isn’t just staying away from the iPad, but many of the celebs are doing a public service campaign appearing in coffins, signifying their “digital death” and how they can only survive if you “buy life” to resurrect them. It is a bold and attention-grabbing parallel to the work being done by Keep a Child Alive and this December 1 BUY LIFE program.
Keep A Child Alive buys more than just the pills needed to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa and India. It buys the essential nutrition, shelter, support and education to help ensure those pills are taken properly and effectively. It buys the things we all take for granted, but that make all the difference. A bed. A roof. A ride. A book. A smile. KCA offers children, their families and entire communities a shoulder to lean on and a heart that beats for them. Because KCA believes we can do something far bigger and better than buy the ability to live. We can buy the dignity that is life. We can buy compassion. Buy love. Buy the cure. Buy life.

This is just another ego ploy – whether they openly admit it or consciously understand it. By saying they’ll be “silent”, they’re still drawing attention to themselves.
“Lookit me, lookit me… I’m giving! I’m giving! Me. Me. Me.”
Be charitable, but keep it secret; do not flaunt it.

If it helps, good! It is funny, that them NOT saying anything will HELP, Ha, Ha, Ha!! Maybe if they always did that, and just donated THEIR money, instead of asking us to donate OURS? Usually they give a free concert, but beg for our money, what the hell is the difference, then…it actually costs us the consumer more…wake up people!! The “stars”, self-appointed, or idiot induced can afford to give a few million away instead of begging us to donate to “their” favorite charity of the “month”, what to you think?

A wonderful idea, applaudable, even.
My heart sinks, though, at what might be missing in our own world territory. I know it seems like a comedown to your marvelous article. However, I feel a spirit of giving must happen where one is living first, before the rest of the world may benefit.

The arrogance of these celebs, that in effect, people will pay good money to get their insipid twitter feeds back. And sadly, people will. The charity is an afterthought. How can they live their day without knowing when Kim Kardashian touches up her makeup? As PT Barnum said, (I paraphrase) no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the public.

Great post, a great cause. Got my support- I’ll be sharing this all over.
In the end, it’s not about the celebrities- it’s about the fact there is aid going to those who need it more than you and I.
I’m all in favor of ‘celebrities’ supporting a charity. So what if it’s to go ‘digitally dark’ with FB, Twitter, et al? It’s about getting media attention for a just cause. We’ll see the real benefit of folks keeping quiet, and doing something with real benefit. I’m all for more of this stuff happening, if it helps. Thanks for sharing this post!

Unfortunately, if celebrities don’t use their fame and/or gimmicks to promote good causes, the job just isn’t going to get done. It doesn’t matter a whole lot who did or said what to the people who will benefit.

I just saw a story about Kim Karadashian doing the coffin thing. I think it’s great that these celebrities are using their fame to bring exposure to certain issues but how about not paying these celebs so much and using that money for causes?

Why does Willow Smith even have a Twitter or Facebook account? Isn’t she 10 or something? Good parenting Will! And if the Kardashians want to save a few extra bucks, they can do a photoshoot of themselves in the coffins at the same time to signify the deaths of their careers when their extended 15 minutes of fame are finally up.

I think it is great that celebs support charities as they are role models and are also very fortunate and so it is a positive message. This is a novel way to support a great cause – I love the fact that it proves just how reliant we have all become on the cyber world… I think that it carries a deeper meaning of not being complacent, and that we all spend so much time sharing trivial aspects of our lives, or reading about the celebs via their social networking, that Digitally Dark will defo shed some light and will be a time of reflection.

Tennis celebrities are joining
It is very interesting that the tennis star Serena Williams has signed on as well. The rumour is that the tennis celebrity and playboy Frederik Fetterlein is signing on too even though most of his time is going to plan his romantic castle wedding in the French Castle Hattonchâtel Château.
The castle is known from the television program “The celebrities at the castle”.

Anything that raises money for a good cause is okay with me…The celebs will probably go through withdrawal as much as their worshiping readers. I’m glad that I haven’t gotten addicted to Twitter and Tweets.

I absolutely love this idea! Alicia Keys is very socially aware and has done alot not only for the US but for many other countries as well. She has put her career on hold for all of her charity work and is continuing to pursue her charity work even during her pregnancy. From experience, I know alot of people follow celebritities on Twitter and are interested in what they have to say. Lady Gaga is one of the most followed people on Twitter and for her to stop tweeting is really going to catch peoples eye and they will probably donate money for her to start tweeting. Justin Timberlake is also a very interesting tweeter and says some pretty funny and outrageous things so hopefully this idea works. Not only that, but the celebs will probably donate tons of money as well so they can get back on twitter because it is definently addicting.

It makes me mad when I watch the news and I see a rich Billionare spending 300 billion on truffles when that money could go to save families. It really shows where some people’s priorities are. I love Alicia Keys. Her music is brilliant. Her messages are very powerful and enlightening. This is a really great idea and I hope that they reach their goals asap.
